The first step to building an effective earthquake safety and preparaedness plan is having an earthquake kit and earthquake supplies for your home and car. Earthquakes shake the earth with a violent and devastating force that can cause wide spread casualties and destruction. Follow these steps to help protect those in your home and car when the 'Big One' that experts predict unfortunately becomes reality:

Prepare an Earthquake Emergency Plan for your Home:

  • Choose a safe place for protection from an earthquake in every room of your house because its dangerous to try and move to far during the aggressive shaking of an earthquake. Good earthquake protection places include getting under a sturdy table or desk. The next best place to cover yourself from falling and flying objects during an earthquake is in a door-way (just be careful of the door slamming your fingers). If nothing else, try to get up against an inside wall where nothing can fall on you.
  • Practice DROP, COVER, AND HOLD ON at least twice a year. Drop under a sturdy desk or table, hold on, and protect your eyes by pressing your face against your arm. Teach children -- in case of an earthquake, DROP, COVER, AND HOLD ON!
  • Choose an out-of-town family contact. The ability to use a telephone and contact family or rescue personnel is essential. In case you do not have a cellular phone or if its battery is dead when you need it most, we recommend that you fill out the Out of State Friends and Family Contact Cards ahead of time. You simply fill out the card with anybody's contact information who lives out of your state. Since local phone lines will mostly be out of service, you can still reach friends/family via a payphone in order to inform them of your safety conditions (don't forget quarters).
  • Eliminate hazards by: bolting bookcases, china cabinets, and other tall furniture to wall studsInstalling strong latches on cupboards. Strapping the water heater to wall studs.
  • Take a first aid class and/or disaster training course.
  • Get a home fire extinguisher.
  • Make sure to inform your relatives, caretakers, babysitters, housekeeper, and neighbors of your disaster plan.
